Saturday’s game proved that times have changed. This time last year, the All blacks beat the Boks 19-0 in Newlands with a clinical perfomance that saw the boks with no answers. Yet now we see a complete turnaround in fortunes as the boks played smart, intelligent rugby that the All Blacks could not keep up with and thus won 28-19. I believe the boks won because of 4 important aspects.
1)Good tactical kicking by playing in opposition’s territory. Credit must go to Ruan Pienaar, Fourie Du Preez and Frans Steyn who all made sure that the boks did not have to play too much rugby in their own half. This was an intelligent strategy and credit must go to the coaching staff for that.
2)The boks managed to slow down New Zealand ball dramatically and this is where Heinrich and Juan Smith must be commended. They teamed up to nullify Mr Rugby McCaw. For Heirich to get the Man of the Match award when facing the world’s finest flanker is a feat and he surprised even the most ardent Bok fans.
3)The dominance showed by the bok forwards in the line-outs and the use of the driving maul was of top class quality. Here, all credit goes to Victor Matfield who seemed to know 90% of the NZ calls in the lineouts and stole some key lineout ball. The scrums were very much 50/50 with both sides winning on their own put in. John Smit passed the test versus world class opposition in the form of Tony Woodcock. The Beast must be commended for his work in the loose play and once again, his combination with the captain is proving to be a master stroke because John Smit is a prop who likes the tight play while Beast likes the open play. They are 2 very different props in the way they play but clearly combine well when on the park together.
4)The boks had many players who played as if their lives depended on it. Mention must be made of Brian Habana who spent the whole afternoon chasing kicks and putting in 1st time tackles. The value of Bakkies Botha and Juan Smith is not always visible when they are on the park but only when they are not playing. They both cleared out at the breakdown like demon possessed men. All the hard work that is not seen on camera adds up and at the moment, the boks have a good mix of players with flair and a few who are just good old hard grafters and get the job done behind the scenes.
Overall, the All Blacks had no answer for the boks and if Ruan had not kicked like a 120 year old granny, the score line would have been similar to the Newlands test in 2008, only this time, Peter De Villiers is the winner and Graham Henry finds himself with more questions than answers. For next week, I do not see much changing. The All Blacks are a good and gutsy side but they are facing a team that has been together since 2004, full of confidence, next to a coaching team that is improving by the day and with a Durban crowd that will be fully behind the men in green. The All Blacks will need a miracle in the 2nd test because on Saturday they were 2nd best by more than the flattering 9 points margin that they got due to the boks’ poor place kicking.

The AB’s got owned in most aspects of the game….the first half for them was scramble defence from the get go, proven by the number of penalties and warnings from a very lenient ref, which were the result of the immense pressure they were under.
They did make a spirited comeback in the second half I will give them that, but alas i agree….the scoreline doesn’t reflect how dominant the boks were.
And as for Brussow, to have played and featured the way he did against richie (who had a storming game!!) makes me feel so comfortable knowing how huge of a player this man will become…. the heir to mcaws throne may be in the house….

Having watched this game in a confined of Boks supporters, I had no where to hide after the game! There was a moment when Conrad Smith danced to the try line and scored, then I thought it was game on and the All Blacks were in the ascendancy but a crucial error at a crucial time allowed Fourie to score the winning try for the Boks. If the All Blacks had not made that error then we may be talking a different story this morning. I was livid at Jason Eaton for giving away such a silly penalty at the end which denied the All Blacks a bounce point. All in all, a very bad day at the office for the All Blacks with very few positives to take away from Bloem to Durban.
I will not use the fact that the All Blacks had to travel half way across the world before the game as an excuse. We knew once the fixture list was out before the Tri-Nations that the All Blacks had been given a very tough draw. I had thought that the All Blacks could have caved in like the Chiefs did in the Super 14 final but they didn’t.
I am still shocked at how pathetic the All Black lineout is! You can not expect to beat the Boks if your lineout is not working. The presence of an Ali Williams or Chris Jack in needed for the All Blacks and Hore needs to learn to throw the ball!!! I can see Mealamu staring in Durban ahead of Hore.
I was impressed with Stephen Donald at 10 and his goal kicking. His boot kept the All Blacks in the game but he was unable to get the backline running and I can not remember the All Black backline having a run besides the try they scored. Muliaina again had a disappointing game and I just hope he wakes up soon!
Looking at the Boks..well played, I just wonder how serious the injuries to Ruan and de Villiers as because if these two are not fit for Durban, we will see a new look Bok backline.
Durban on Saturday will be a different game and if the All Blacks play for two half’s instead of one like they did on Saturday then we will def have another very close game. Not playing at altitude will def help the All Blacks. Do not right off the All Blacks for one second, come Saturday, be sure to see an All Black win!!!!

I have to agree with Fraz. At the risk of punting Heirich too much, he certainly has proven himself vs the very best. His next challenge will be facing the Wallabies with 3 good quality fetchers in Smith, Waugh and Pocock.
As for Ron’s point on the All Blacks winning next week, the truth is, that’s all up to the boks. They decided who takes the test in Durban. Barring a brain implosion, if the Boks just play to their basics, keep the ball in the forwards, kick for territory and with Morne possibly starting the All Blacks will have to obey instructions and follow the orders……………………………the decision lies with the boks Ron.

We have seen the Boks on numerous occasions this year almost throw the game away. Twice versus the Lions they almost made it slip. On Saturday they almost made it slip bar some circus play by Muliaina and Weepu that lead to the Fourie try. The Boks WILL again on Saturday be incharge and let the All Blacks back in the game and this time Guru the All Blacks will capitalise. One of the Boks biggest weakness is failing to shut down a game and give the opposition no chance of coming back.
So Guru, the All Blacks will obey instructions and follow orders on Saturday but beware of giving the All Blacks an opportunity for them to express themselves. I will quote the famous words of one Bobby Digital, “It is my time to speak!!”

i for one was a very happy man on saturday. i felt the boks played amazing rugby. they deserved the win.
to be honest, for next weeks game i would still love ot see ruan starting at flyhalf, i felt the backline was a bit more dangerous with him at the helm. Plus his defence is pretty solid compared to the porous effort of morne steyn that let conrad smith into the try zone. If he improves his kicking i can see why PDV wants him as his flyhalf for the world cup. he adds more in terms of vision plus he has a hefty clearing boot.
As for the injury to De villiers, am okay with it as i rate wynand olivier and beleive he just might be better than jean. His defense when he came on was immense even though he gave away a stupid penalty for not rolling away. gents we just might be looking at the new western province centre pairing in jaque Fourie and Olivier ( offered large sums of money to move when his contract expires) if they play together.
but nonethe less a great game by the boks.

I was impressed at the pressure the boks put them in the first half. I thought 50 points were attainable but ruan kept ruining that possibility. in the second half boks went to sleep. kaino was a menace in the boks side as well.
I think durban will be close but only if boks allow it….. this allblack side is work in progress and have no right to bully boks this week. bokke…..
