We have had 5 rounds of the Super 14 so far this year. I recall before the start of the Super 14 how many of us were looking forward to the tournament. The question I would like to pose to you at this stage of the tournament is: how have you found the tournament so far? Has it met your expectations?
We have the Bulls leading the table which is a surprise to many as I know quite a few people had written them off before the season started. The Sharks started off well bar the loss last weekend against the Reds. Many had high hopes for the Stormers but they have blown hot and cold. From a New Zealand perspective this could be the worst Super Rugby tournament for them in a while. None of their teams have stood out. The almighty Crusaders seem to be struggling. In Australia all four franchises seem to be playing decent rugby but nothing really to blow us away.

I think it would be unfair to blame any sort of lack of fluidity on th players themselves. I am of the opinion that the ELV’s and the ref’s freedom in interpretation of situations such as the breakdown. I feel that there are too many short arm penalties and players sometimes fould on prupose knowing that they have 3 short arms available before a long arm is given.Since the introduction of ELV’s, stats have proven that the Kicking teams are the winning teams and not the one with the most possession. This is really sad considering that in the past, teams like the Crusaders and Brumbies were awarded for their consistency in retention of the pill. Now, we have a team like the Bulls which has kicked the most being at the top of the log. I think the standard of the S14 has not been at it’s best not because of the quality of mplayers but rather the interpretation of the ELVs.

in all honesty no team has stamped their authority. the only exciting part about this years tourney is that its to close to call. last week i said this year s14 has been ordinary and i am not Supprised 80% of the poll agrees So far anyWay. rules are new yes but all teams have profesional players whom i think, are inconsistent rather that struggling with the rules. ive been following the weekly s14 team and its amazing how different it looks every week.
