We rolling back the years today as BP reminded me about this great moment in world rugby. The match was in 1994, the Bledisloe Cup game at Sydney Football Stadium. George Gregan (still with hair) nails Jeff Wilson as he is diving for the game winning try and knocks the ball loose. As small as Gregan may have been physically, he always put it critical tackles and non more so important than this one. You can view the video below to relive that moment or if you have never watched it before.

I can not argue with you on that one Manny but the All Black will always throw the name of Justin Marshall into that debate and the Boks will have Joost. All 3 were world class but for me Georgie just shades it as the better man.

yup, gotta go with the gregan oke, i reckon he got his mad skills from his zimbo roots tho…i reckon both marshall and gregan could still be playing, aussie are lacking a decent 9…i watched him play for the baabaas at wembley last december and the guy was awesome…

Gregan’s roots are Zambian BP, let’s not try take credit
I agree with you that aussie have not been able to replace Gregan but they always seem to produce these talented kids like James O’Connor and I am sure they have another Georgie coming up soon. They made a big mistake of never been able to groom a successor to Georgie and now they suffering because of that.

My bad just went to wikipedia and seen that Gregan was born in Zambia but has a Zimbabwean mum and Australian father. So you were correct BP!

there ya go mate….we have to claim something on that one with gregan….one of the first things i knew about georgie was that his queen was of zim origin….
true, aussie are suffering for it, but they tried to groom 2 older scrumhalves for gregan but it was to little too late when they both left for europe at the same time…but as you say, those cats spurn talented players allmost as much as the kiwis do…so its just a matter of time…

Oh, what memories………i’ll give it to George Gregan. He stood the test of time and criticism. Managed to silence each and everyone of them. The greatest srumhalf of his era…by far!!

You guys are old huh. 80% of Bloggersphere is in a fist fight about the Stormers // Sarries game on Saturday and you are reliving 1994 when I was in Std 9?
This is the reason why this thread has 6 comments only.
Don’t get me wrong. I like Gregan, and he was great, but there are a lot of current events that warrant debate. ie The Boooing at Newlands. C’mon old timers. Let’s have your views.

haha dude, that gregan tackle will go down in history almost as famous as johna running over mike catt at the ’95 world cup, what recent events like that stand out?
there can be another post about the stormers and other SA teams preseason, like the bulls getting thumped by the lions….or the toothless sharks!
