The Springboks got the win on Saturday against Wales but they were made to sweat for it. Going into the game, Guru had predicted the Boks to win by 13 by I thought it would be much closer than that and I was correct. The Boks only managed to win the game 20-15 after leading 20-3 with 20 minutes to play.
One would say that the Boks deserved their win as they outplayed Wales and this is a fair statement. It was never going to be a walk in the park for the Boks. Coming into the game, all eyes were on Ruan Pienaar at flyhalf and John Smit at tighthead. I must say that I was impressed with Pienaar in his new role and he put in a commanding display and was also accurate with his kicking for goal. Now Ruan needs to build from this performance and keep on going. Now that Ruan will be playing flyhalf for the Sharks in next years Super 14 we will see what he is made of when he goes head to head with some great flyhalfs in the tournament. Same to for John Smit, he put in a good performance against Wales but tougher tests are going to come his way.
There seems to be a familiar pattern developing for the Boks; Jean de Villiers = intercept try! Being a master of the intercept try in my playing days I have to take my hat off to Jean. It is not an easy skill or an art but the frequency de Villiers does it is amazing.
Now that the Boks have gotten the win under their belt, they need to build from this and not only beat Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday but beat them convincingly like the All Blacks did.
South Africa – Tries: Adi Jacobs, Jean de Villiers. Conversions: Ruan Pienaar (2). Penalties: Pienaar (2).
Wales – Penalties: Leigh Halfpenny, James Hook (4).

As a bok supporter I must say that I am happy with the victory no matterv how it came about. Wales were never going to be easy as the 6 Nations champs at home and although in had called boks by 13, boks by 5 is good enough for me. I am happy with Smit and Ruan and I think their roles vs Scotland will be slightly less tasking and it should set them up before the big one vs England.
On the whole, a good startegy of not playing in our half and using the boot intelligently. It amazes me that not one of the usual PDV critics has a single word for him this time around. PDV is on track!!!!!!!!
